Photo a Day : Day 47 Som Tum Isan Style
When I was young my mother would make Som Tum (Papaya Salad) all the time. I moved away to college and I ate at various Thai restaurant. I soon realized that the Som Tum at the restaurants were much different from the way my mother would make it. The Som Tum I loved eating growing up was Isan (Lao ) style. The difference is that it has little fermented crabs called ( Bpoo Kem) and did not have peanuts . It makes one hell of a difference! My favorite Thai restaurant New Krung Thai in West San Jose makes a good Som Tum Isan style. Growing up on Thai food I know good Thai cuisine. It’s hard to say that about many Thai restaurants where they tend to lose the authentic taste trying to adapt to the western pallet. If you want to try this dish simply ask for Som Tum Isan Style, Thai spicy! Enjoy!
